The information was reported Tuesday by Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, who took part in a round table dedicated to amendments of the Health Insurance Act.

Djankov says some of the funds would be secured through the proposed increase of cigarettes and alcohol excise that would provide respectively an additional BGN 130 M and 60 M.

Djankov plans for the funds to be used in the areas of health care and sports with the BGN 130 M to be given to the Health Minister, who will decide how they will be distributed. Djankov's opinion is that the best use of the money will be for the cure of illnesses such as asthma that are directly affected by second hand smoking.

The Finance Minister further said the changes in health insurance will provide better financing and would require optimization of the number rand type of hospital facilities.
